Skill 1: Listening
steps
1. Look at the person who is talking.
2. Think about what is being said.
3. Wait your turn to talk.
4. Say what you want to say.
Examples:

• Face the person; establish eye contact.
• Show this by nodding your head, saying "mm-hmm."
• Don't fidget; don't shuffle your feet,
• Ask questions; express feelings; express your ideas.

Skill 2: Starting a conversation
STEPS
1. Greet the other person.
2. Make small talk.
3. Decide if the other person is listening.
4. Bring up the main topic.
Examples:

• Say "hi"; shake hands; choose the right time and place.
• Talk about sports, the weather,school events, and so forth,
• Check if the other person is listening: looking at you,nodding, saying "mm-hmm,"

Skill 3: Having a conversation
Steps:
1. Say what you want to say.
2. Ask the other person what he/she thinks.
3. Listen to what the other person says.
4. Say what you think.
5. Make a closing remark.
Examples:

• Review steps for Skill 1 (Listening).
• Respond to the other person; add new information; ask questions.
• Discuss types of closing remarks. Steps 1-4 can be repeated many times before Step 5 is done.

Skill 4: Asking a Question
STEPS
1. Decide what you'd like to know more about.
2. Decide whom to ask.
3. Think about different ways to ask your question and pick one way.
4. Pick the right time and place to ask your question.
5. Ask your question.
Examples:

• Ask about something you don't understand, something you didn't hear, or something confusing.
• Think about who has the best information on a topic; consider asking several people.
• Think about wording; raise your hand; ask nonchallengingly.
• Wait for a pause; wait for privacy.

Skill 5: Saying Thank You
STEPS
1. Decide if the other person said or did something that you want to thank him/her for.
2. Choose a good time and place to thank the other person.
3. Thank the other person in a friendly way.
4. Tell the other person why you are thanking him/her.

Example:

• It may be a compliment, favor, or gift.
• This is a quiet time, a private place, or other time and place where you are sure you will have the other person's attention.
• Express thanks with words, a gift, a letter, or do a return favor.

Skill 6 Introducing Yourself
STEPS
1. Choose the right time and place to introduce yourself.
2. Greet the other person and tell your name.
3. Ask the other person his/her name if you need to.
4. Tell or ask the other person something to help start your conversation.
Example:

• Shake hands, if appropriate,
• Tell something about yourself;comment on something you both have in common; ask a question.

Skill 7: Introducing Other People
STEPS
1. Name the first person and tell him/her the name of the second person.
2. Name the second person and tell him/her the name of the first person.
3. Say something that helps the two people get to know each other.
Example:

• Speak clearly and loudly enough so that the names are heard by both people.
• Mention something they have in common; invite them to talk or do something with you: say how you know each of them

Skill 8: Giving a complaint
STEPS
1. Decide what you want to compliment about the other person.
2. Decide how to give the compliment.
3. Choose the right time and place to say it.
4. Give the compliment.
Examples:

• It may be the person's appearance, behavior, or another accomplishment.
• Consider the wording and ways to keep the other person and yourself from feeling embarrassed.
• It may be a private place or a time when the other person is unoccupied.
• Be friendly and sincere.

Introduction

Welcome to DEEP Program 2010 Spring.
It is very exciting to be back. This semester there are new members and also, old ones. So let us introduce our-selves:

Amber Acevedo: I’m a Master’s student in the Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation program at Syracuse University. I’m originally from Orlando, Florida so this winter was my first REAL winter with snow and cold (I loved it!). When I’m not busy with school I like to watch movies, find new music, and participate on message boards.

Lu Chen: I will be your facilitator in this Digital movie making class. I am a student in School of Education in Syracuse University. I'm from Beijing China. Whenever I have free time, my favorite thing to do is to watch movie. Also, I'm in favor of music and painting.

Yan Huang: I come from China. Now I am a Master in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation within Syracuse University. I am working at Center for Digital Literacy (Syracuse University) as a media-specialist. My duty is to shoot interviews (30min-1h), transcribe it, edit it into 5 minutes videos.
